I just love the book! It is exactly what I have been searching, and searching, and searching for! You did a great job putting it all together. Michelle, Colorado
Just a few of the topics covered are how to play in different keys, how melodies and chords fit together, chords and chord progressions, as well as hints on how to vary tunes and how to play with singers. Learn these and so much more!
Other music theory texts teach general theory knowledge. This information is not related to any specific instrument or music style, and therefore contains information you will never use. What makes "Easy Music Theory for Fiddle and Mandolin" different is that it teaches only the theory relating to your kind of music, applied directly to your instrument. Three chapters entitled "Practical Applications of Music Theory" demonstrate how to use this knowledge to improve your playing.
This book is intentionally not a complete music theory text. It focuses on the theory knowledge needed for Bluegrass, Oldtime Fiddling, Country and Folk music styles. Plus, it is a good introduction to music theory for people who wish to learn more later.
See how increasing your knowledge of music will make you a better musician.
Reviews and Comments about Easy Music Theory for Fiddle and Mandolin
"Many thanks for the book and tape. I find the book and tape to be very useful and enjoyable"
Jim, Pennsylvania
"I like the Music Theory book very much" Lonnie, Alabama
"The book's great - as is the service. I ordered my copy through a customer in Mercer Island WA, who was just about to mail me the money for an instrument she'd ordered from me last year (waiting-time now around 9 months, I'm afraid). Peter Martin went out of his way to meet my customer outside normal working hours, so that she could deduct the cost of the book from her check. You don't find that kind of service everywhere...." Ken, United Kingdom
"I took up John McGann's suggestion to check out the book/tape by Peter Martin entitled Easy Music Theory for Fiddle and Mandolin and the Tape for Music Theory Book. They are really great tools for getting some of the necessary mando basics down. And as someone else mentioned earlier, Peter Martin is very pleasant to deal with, and he managed to get his book/tape from the west coast to me in PA in two days. So thanks to Peter, and to John for the original post." Jim, posted to COMANDO, (mandolin news list)
"Peter Martin's (Music Theory for Fiddle and Mandolin) book is a good place to start. The book is obviously very theory oriented. If you follow each chapter to the end you'll know a heck of a lot of scales and chords and such and how to apply them to your playing. Again, that may be obvious, given that it's a theory book. This book is clearly and well written. If you want to understand the language of music as it relates to the mando this seems a good choice." Mike K, posted to COMANDO
"I just love the book! It is exactly what I have been searching, and searching, and searching for! You did a great job putting it all together. I plan on recommending this book at fiddle camp, I will bring it along for sure. No doubt it will get some use!!" Michelle, Colorado
"The Easy Music Theory for Fiddle and Mandolin book and tape are excellent guides for scale study and developing technical skills." Lyndon, California
"Thanks for the book. I have been using a guitar music theory text, transcribing it to mandolin tab, but this is much easier and has a better layout". Jeff, Virginia
"Great book. A lifetime ago, my violin teacher had me doing scales and arpeggios, but I never did catch on that they formed a language I could use. Your book has opened that door for me" Ellen, Oregon
"Just wanted to tell you how much I have valued the Music Theory book I bought from you. It's the best tool I have so far in my journey to play the mandolin well. Very logical and methodical." Nettie, Alaska
I just wanted to write you a "first impression" response to your Theory book, which is that I love it! So clear and though. Sarah, Washington
