Reviews and Comments about Texas Style Fiddle Transcriptions, Volume 1
Review from the DEVILS BOX MAGAZINE, Spring 1997
The superb transcriptions found in this collection can be accurately described as an "in depth" study of the beautiful and complex Texas fiddle style. In fact, here's a brief quote from the introduction by the author in which he says, "This book is a collection of common and not so common tunes as played by some of the finest Texas fiddler. The tunes are written in standard notation. I have taken great care to transcribe not only the notes, but also the bowing as accurately as I can."
In addition, here's some good advice from the author on practicing and working up this material. "When learning each tune play through the music slowly and watch the bow directions! Don't expect to learn these in one play through. Play them many times and listen to Texas style players to learn the phrasing."
Now as we look over and play through this very impressive collection, the term "specialized" comes to mind because all the tunes contained here are very special in the truest sense of the word. For example, take the beautiful transcription of LIMEROCK, which is one of the true masterpieces in the Texas fiddle music category. In his arrangement of this number, Peter Martin has skillfully assembled all the different parts (sections) of this tune complete with the very effective key changes, various musical devices (harmonics, triplet runs, double stops, pizzicato, etc.) that make up this very unique fiddlers showpiece.
This same royal treatment, of course, has been given to all the other numbers as well. You are sure to be equally impressed by tunes such as RIVER ROAD TWO STEP, KELLEY WALTZ, I DON'T LOVE NOBODY, RUNAWAY FIDDLE, TOM AND JERRY, and 12TH STREET RAG to name just a few that we have been working on since obtaining this book.
It should also be mentioned that the music throughout this book is beautifully and clearly printed. Such treatment is what you would expect to find in a truly outstanding collection of tunes such as this. I feel that with so many fiddlers of all ages either working on or looking for material such as found in this book, it should be an ideal source for them to learn from in preparation for contest playing. It is, of course, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Frank Milloy
"Enclosed is a check for a copy of your book "Benny Thomasson Fiddle Transcriptions." Last year at the National Oldtime Fiddlers Contest at Weiser, I purchased your "Texas Style Fiddle Transcriptions," and found them to be the finest transcriptions of this style of music I had ever read. Having a strong background in classical violin playing, and hence reading, I truly appreciate the painstaking care and accuracy you put into your work. I look forward to working with your new transcriptions of the playing of certainly one of the greatest proponents , if not inventors of Texas Style. Thank you for all of your hard work, you make the task of learning this great style a little easier. James, New Jersey
"I sat down last night and read through all three books (Texas Style Fiddle Transcriptions, Volume 1 and 2, Benny Thomasson Fiddle Transcriptions). All I have to say, as I've said before is "WOW." Thank you for taking the time to compile these books. As I was telling one of my students last week, a lot of recordings I have are not available any more. I've been fortunate to meet great players and be around Texas style fiddling. A lot of people don't have that privilege and opportunity. However, a few good books are available now. If you can read music, you're well on your way. Your books are a wonderful resource for the aspiring Texas style player. It's a wonderful teaching resource for me. I look forward to using it in the future with my students. Thanks once again! I'm going to do my best to promote your books at Mark's camp." Daniel Carwile, Grand Masters Fiddle Champion, many time teacher at Mark O'Connor's Music Camp
