Reviews and Comments about Texas Style Fiddle Transcriptions, Volume 2

Fiddler Magazine, Summer 1998
"Just in time for summer fiddling fun comes Pete Martin's Texas Style Fiddle Transcriptions, Volume 2, featuring eighteen transcriptions. These are single performances transcribed in their entirety rather than composite versions.

The accuracy of Pete's previous work has been excellent. Everything here is thoroughly bowed and the bowings work, all the way through the tunes. If this volume were used only as an encyclopedia of the many bowings Texas fiddlers use to break up the steady stream of eighth notes, it would be well worth the price. When these bowings are found wrapped around the great note choices of these players, this book becomes a must have for anyone interested in this challenging fiddle genre.

Pete has a good ear for details, and such important elements as Texas fiddling's idiosyncratic hooks (rocking movements of the bow from a single string to a pair of strings at the ends of phrases), double stops and grace notes are accurately notated. These pieces will no doubt require some wood shedding, as they are professional performance versions, but the fact is these are the versions the big dogs played, and we mortals might just as well get the book, get out from under the porch and into the woodshed.

Both this Volume 2 and the earlier Volume 1 get my highest recommendation. Keep up the good work, Pete!"  Paul Anastasio, Fiddler Magazine

"Last year at the National Oldtime Fiddlers Contest at Weiser, I purchased your "Texas Style Fiddle Transcriptions", and found them to be the finest transcriptions of this style of music I had ever read. Having a strong background in classical violin playing, and hence reading, I truly appreciate the painstaking care and accuracy you put into your work. I look forward to working with your new transcriptions. Thank you for all of your hard work, you make the task of learning this great style a little easier. James, New Jersey

"I sat down last night and read through all three books (Texas Style Fiddle Transcriptions, Volume 1 and 2, Benny Thomasson Fiddle Transcriptions). All I have to say, as I've said before is "WOW". Thank you for taking the time to compile these books. As I was telling one of my students last week, a lot of recordings I have are not available any more. I've been fortunate to meet great players and be around Texas style fiddling. A lot of people don't have that privilege and opportunity. However, a few good books are available now. If you can read music, you're well on your way. Your books are a wonderful resource for the aspiring Texas style player. It's a wonderful teaching resource for me. I look forward to using it in the future with my students. Thanks once again! I'm going to do my best to promote your books at Mark's camp." Daniel Carwile, Grand Masters Fiddle Champion, many time teacher at Mark O'Connor's Music Camp
